For 35 years, Elizabeth considered herself a strong, independent, and active person. She was a mom, a wife, and a high performer in a stressful career. Anxiety wasn't on her radar. Then, about a year ago, it hit her "like a ton of bricks."

Her journey started with terrifying physical sensations that sent her to the ER, convinced she was dying. Doctors ran tests, but everything came back normal. Soon after, a full-blown panic attack while driving left her stranded in a Taco Bell parking lot, completely unable to think straight.

This was the beginning of a year that would turn her world upside down.

When Your Body Feels Like It's on Fire

Elizabeth described the feeling of constant anxiety as her "body being on fire." She was flooded with overwhelming physical symptoms:

  • Tingling sensations all over her body

  • Feeling like she couldn't get a full breath

  • A lump in her throat that made it hard to swallow

  • Being unable to eat or sleep

  • Hypersensitivity to every sensation in her body

"You name a physical symptom, I had it," she explained. "And I had multiple at a time." This constant state of alarm made everyday tasks feel impossible. Driving became terrifying.

Being alone in her own home, once a source of comfort, became a source of fear. She was scared to be alone with her young son, plagued by "what if" thoughts.

The Problem with Trying to "Fix" Anxiety

Like many high-achievers, Elizabeth’s first instinct was to fix the problem. She jumped into therapy, tried supplements, and did everything she could to get back to "normal." But her efforts were focused on one thing: getting rid of the feeling.

"The more I'm trying to resist this and get rid of this, the more it's like my body's like, 'Oh no, something is wrong,'" she said. "What you resist, persists."

This is a common trap. When we treat anxiety as an enemy to be defeated, we send signals to our nervous system that we are in danger, which only perpetuates the cycle of fear.

The Turning Point: An Awakening

The real shift for Elizabeth didn't come from a magic pill or a quick fix. It came from a profound change in her approach. Instead of resisting, she started allowing it. Instead of fighting, she started feeling.

She realized that years of suppressing her feelings in a stressful marriage and a traumatic job in child services had caused her system to completely overflow.

"I stuffed so much, and my system just got overloaded," she realized. "It makes complete sense."

This realization allowed her to finally give herself grace. The key elements of her healing included:

  1. Feeling the Feelings: Instead of trying to distract or escape, she learned to sit with the physical sensations and emotions, acknowledge them, and let them be.

  2. Self-Compassion: She flipped the script on her harsh inner critic. She started talking to herself with the same kindness she would offer a friend, recognizing that her body was just trying to heal.

  3. Taking Meaningful Action: She stopped doing things to get rid of anxiety and started doing things that brought her genuine joy. She started taking violin lessons—something she'd always wanted to do. This wasn't a distraction; it was an act of pouring back into herself.

  4. Setting Boundaries: The journey inward made her realize what was no longer serving her. She resigned from her stressful job and committed to never again accepting behaviors in her relationship that made her feel unsafe.

  5. You Are Stronger Than You Think

Elizabeth’s story is a powerful reminder that healing is possible, even when it feels like you might not wake up tomorrow. Her message to anyone in the thick of it is simple but profound:

“lf that you're stronger than you even think you are... and you will be on the other side of it."

It's not about finding a magic cure to eliminate anxiety forever. It's about learning to listen to your body, giving yourself compassion, and slowly, bravely, showing up for yourself in a new way. It's an awakening to the person you were always meant to be. This is Elizabeth's story of finding true healing from anxiety.
